September 12, 2024 – In response to the resignation of Police Commissioner Edward Caban, the Justice Committee released the following statement from Executive Director Loyda Colón (they, them):
“Good riddance! We welcome the forced resignation of corrupt NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban. Mayor Eric Adams and other top NYPD officials should follow. In his almost three years as mayor, Adams has accelerated the NYPD’s 180-year history of corruption to crisis levels in the form of rampant racial profiling, with officers unconstitutionally stopping-and-frisking more New Yorkers than in almost a decade. Mayor Adams’ consistent refusal to discipline abusive cops means misconduct complaints are at their highest since the Bloomberg era, while the NYPD is burying approximately half of the substantiated complaints investigated and referred for discipline by the Civilian Complaint Review Board. On top of this, Mayor Adams’ primitive caveman approach to addressing poverty and other social issues has expanded the criminalization of unhoused, mentally ill, low-income and other vulnerable New Yorkers. Mayor Adams needs to go, too: New Yorkers need leaders who will prioritize our needs over their pockets and political ambitions and we must stand for nothing less.”
